GE Trash Compactor Ram Stops Halfway or Will Not Return

A compactor that stops mid-stroke is usually reacting to a blockage, a bag problem or a switch. Here is what to check, and what should stay in the hands of a technician.

A GE trash compactor works by driving a ram down onto the contents of a bag. When the ram stops partway, the machine has sensed something it does not like, or the drive has run out of travel. The problem may be in the load, not in the machine.

Load and Bag First

  • Bulky or rigid items: boxes, glass jars and pans can wedge against the ram. Remove what you can reach with the power off.
  • Bag size and fit: use bags made for your drawer. A bag caught between the drawer and the cabinet can block travel.
  • Overfilled drawer: if the bag is already full, the ram has nowhere to go.

Check the Drawer and Key

Many compactors will not run unless the drawer is fully closed and, on some models, the key or control lock is in the on position. A drawer held open by a bag edge by even an inch can stop the ram.

Power and Reset

Unplug the unit for a minute, plug it back in and run one cycle with a light load. If it runs normally once, the stop may have been a sensed obstruction.

What Not To Do

Do not reach under or beside the ram while the power is connected, and do not try to push the ram by hand. A compactor ram carries real force.

Limits of a Stalled Ram

A ram that stops at the same spot with an empty bag, or one that will not rise, points to the drive, switches or the ram assembly. The behavior alone cannot tell which of those it is.
