Setting Up a GE Wine and Beverage Center in a Houston Garage or Pantry

Heat and humidity are hard on wine centers. Placement, airflow and a few habits decide how well a GE wine and beverage center holds temperature through a Gulf Coast summer.

A GE wine and beverage center is built to hold a steady cool temperature, but it also has to push heat out somewhere. In a hot garage or a closed pantry that heat has nowhere to go, and the unit works harder.

Where It Works Best

  • Conditioned space: an air-conditioned room is easier on the unit than a garage that sees summer heat.
  • Airflow: leave the clearances named in your installation instructions, and do not stuff boxes against the vents.
  • Away from heat: avoid sunny spots and the side of an oven, dishwasher or dryer.
  • Level and steady: a level cabinet keeps door seals even and reduces vibration.

Built-In or Freestanding

A built-in model usually vents at the front, which is why it can sit under a counter. A freestanding model may need open space at the sides and back. Installing the wrong style in a tight space is a common reason for poor performance.

Day to Day

  1. Keep the door gasket clean and flexible. Wipe it with a damp cloth.
  2. Do not load many warm bottles at once. Add them in batches.
  3. Put a separate thermometer inside during the first day.
  4. Vacuum dust from vents or grilles a few times a year.

Signs to Watch

Condensation on the glass, a unit that runs constantly or bottles that never reach the set temperature suggest the unit is under strain. Placement may be the cause, or the cooling system may be at its limit. We cannot tell which without seeing the room and testing the unit.
