GE GFC501V Continuous-Feed Disposer Repair

Most common issues on this model

  1. Dishwasher inlet blockage
  2. Overload trips and base reset
  3. Leak at the drain connection or flange
  4. Jammed grinding plate
  5. Switch and power supply

The GE GFC501V is a continuous-feed garbage disposer in the GFC501 family of GE Disposall units. It has an inlet on the body for a dishwasher drain hose, and a reset button on its base resets the thermal overload protection.

Dishwasher drain problems are one of the first checks on this style of disposer, so we clear the inlet and test the hose connection. If the unit hums or stops, we free the plate and look at the overload protection before we condemn the motor. Leaks are traced to the flange, the drain connection or the body, depending on where water first appears.

We use the label on the body to confirm the model and build date before ordering parts, and you receive the price in writing first.

GFC501VGFC501V questions
Does the GFC501V connect to a dishwasher?

GE lists a dishwasher inlet on the body. If the dishwasher drains slowly, we clear the inlet and check the hose, then confirm the disposer is not blocked below it.

What does thermal overload protection do?

It shuts the motor off when it overheats, usually from a jam or a heavy load. The base reset button restarts it after it cools, and we find the cause of the trip.

Why does water leak where the dishwasher hose connects?

The hose clamp or the inlet itself may be loose or cracked. We check both, tighten what we can and quote a replacement if the inlet is damaged.
