A warming drawer is a low-temperature heated drawer for holding food after cooking. GE builds it into a cabinet or beneath a wall oven. It has a heating element or two, a thermostat or electronic control, a vent, and a track and slide for the drawer body.

Warming drawers work quietly and are often forgotten until they stop. In Houston, humidity can corrode the control terminals, and steam from kept food can collect behind the drawer. If the drawer is under a wall oven, heat from the oven above and the same cabinet cut-out shape the airflow.

When we visit we check the drawer travel, measure the actual temperature at each setting, test the element, thermostat and control, and inspect the wiring behind the cabinet. We tell you whether the sign you saw is the whole story.

05Warming Drawer questions
Why is my warming drawer not getting warm?

A failed heating element, a thermostat, a control board or a wiring problem could be involved. We measure the temperature inside the drawer and test each part before saying which one has failed.

Can a warming drawer be dangerous if it overheats?

It can be, because it holds food and sits inside cabinetry. Turn it off and stop using it if it runs hotter than set, and we check the thermostat and control.

Why does my drawer stick?

Track wear, a misaligned drawer front or debris on the rollers is common. We inspect the track and the installation before looking at the electrical side.
