What F11 means

On 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series, F11 is the dry tank alarm. The control believes the tank is not full of water, and running the electric elements in an empty or partly empty tank can damage them. The display shows F11 and the unit sounds an alarm. This is most common right after installation or after the tank has been drained for service. The same F11 means something different on the newer PF and PH platform.

Common causes of F11

  • Whether the tank is completely full, with air purged at a hot faucet
  • The cold water supply and shutoff valve position
  • The dry-tank sensing circuit and its wiring
  • Whether the control was powered before the tank filled
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open a hot faucet in the house and let water run until it flows steadily, so the tank is completely full. 2. Press any button to stop the alarm. 3. Cycle power once the tank is full. 4. If F11 comes back with a full tank, stop and schedule service.

! Why to stop there
  • If F11 returns with a full tank, the tank sensing or the control is suspect and cannot be judged by looking.
  • We confirm the fill first, then test the sensing circuit.
  • Whether the tank sensing or the control is behind a stubborn F11 is settled with a test, not a guess.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F11F11 questions
Why does the alarm sound?

The unit protects its elements from running dry, so it alarms when it thinks the tank is empty. Pressing any button silences the alarm, but the message stays until the tank is full and power has been cycled.

Is it safe to power the heater to test it?

Only with a full tank. Powering the elements without water can ruin them within moments, so fill the tank completely first, run a hot faucet until the flow is steady, and only then restore power to the unit.

Can I just keep pressing the button?

That only mutes the alarm and does not fix anything. If the tank is full and F11 keeps returning after a power cycle, the sensing path needs testing, and we do that on a visit with a written price first.
