GE Disposer Humming but Not Turning: Safe Steps and Limits

A hum without grinding usually means the disposer is jammed, not dead. Here is how to clear it safely, what never to do and when the problem is electrical or a leak.

When a GE garbage disposer hums and does not grind, the motor is getting power but something is holding the shredder plate still. In most homes the cause is a jam from a hard item, fibrous food or a small utensil that slipped in.

Before You Touch Anything

Switch the disposer off at the wall switch and, if you can, unplug it from the outlet under the sink. Never put your hand into the grinding chamber, even with the power off. Use tongs or pliers instead.

Clearing a Jam

  1. Look into the drain with a flashlight and remove anything you can see using tongs.
  2. Find the hex opening in the center of the underside of the unit. Insert the wrench that came with it, or a standard hex key, and work it back and forth until the plate turns freely.
  3. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit if it has popped out.
  4. Restore power, run cold water and test.

Foods and Items That Cause Jams

  • Fruit pits, bones and large seeds.
  • Stringy or fibrous material, such as celery, corn husks and onion skins.
  • Rice, pasta and starchy scraps, which swell into a paste.
  • Grease and oils, which coat the walls and the drain pipe.

When It Is Not a Jam

If the plate turns freely but the unit stays silent, or if it hums, reset and trips again, the motor or its wiring may be the cause. A leak under the unit is a separate problem. Leaks come from the sink flange, the drain connection or the housing, and each needs a different fix.
