GE Microwave Turntable Not Turning: Roller Ring, Coupler and Motor

A stuck turntable leaves cold spots and uneven results. Most of the time the cause is a misplaced ring or coupler, which you can correct with the door open and the power off.

A microwave turntable that has stopped turning rarely means the microwave itself is failing. The parts that carry the glass tray are loose pieces that shift when they are cleaned, and most of the time putting them back correctly restores the rotation.

The Three Parts Under the Tray

  • The glass tray: it sits on top. Check that it is not cracked or warped.
  • The roller ring: a plastic ring with small wheels that supports the tray. It must sit in its track and roll freely.
  • The coupler: the small star-shaped or notched piece in the center of the floor that the motor spins. The tray fits onto it.

Step by Step

  1. Unplug the microwave or leave it idle. Lift out the tray and the ring.
  2. Clean the floor and ring wheels with warm soapy water and remove food or grease.
  3. Check that the coupler is seated and that its shape matches the underside of the tray.
  4. Replace the ring, then the tray, so that its notches engage the coupler.
  5. Run a cup of water for thirty seconds and watch the tray.

Check the Settings Too

Some GE microwaves let you switch the turntable off, for large dishes. If the tray never moves, look in the manual for a turntable on or off option.

If It Still Will Not Turn

A tray that sits correctly but does not move may mean a worn coupler or a failed turntable motor. We cannot judge which from outside the cabinet, and the microwave interior holds a high-voltage capacitor that can remain charged after unplugging, so do not open the case.

When the simple fix falls short, our microwave repair page describes the next step and the service area page confirms coverage. We agree on the price in writing first, and the repair has a 30-day warranty.
