The Anti-Tip Bracket on Your GE Range: Why It Matters and How to Check It

A free-standing range can tip forward if a child climbs on the open door or a heavy pot rests on it. The anti-tip bracket prevents that, and it is easy to verify.

A free-standing range is heavy at the back and lighter at the front. When the oven door is open and a load sits on it, such as a child sitting down or a roasting pan, the range can tip toward the room. The anti-tip bracket is a small part that stops it.

How to Check Yours

  1. Turn off the range and let it cool.
  2. Look at the back at floor level. The bracket is usually a metal plate screwed to the floor or the wall that the range back leg slides into.
  3. Or, with the oven off, open the door and look inside the storage drawer area, then at the lower back for the leg.
  4. Carefully tilt the front of the range up an inch or two. The range should catch against the bracket rather than lift freely.

If you cannot see or feel a bracket, assume it is missing.

Why It Goes Missing

  • Installers sometimes skip it, or it is not fitted after a move.
  • A range that has been pulled out for cleaning may not be pushed back into the bracket.
  • A new floor can cover the original screws.

What to Do

Fit the bracket that came with your range, and anchor it to a solid floor or wall surface, using the instructions in the manual. If you rent or are unsure about the surface, a repair or installation visit can handle it.

Habits That Help

Keep children from sitting or standing on the open oven door. Do not place heavy items on an open door. Open the door, slide the rack out, then lift the dish.

What We Cannot Check by Description

We need to see how the leg engages, since a bracket fitted loosely or at the wrong spot gives a false sense of security.

We can check and install the bracket during a visit. See the range repair page and the service area. The quote is written before work and our workmanship is warranted for 30 days.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
