What ERR + TURN SURFACE BURNERS OFF means
On Café dual-fuel and gas double-oven ranges in the CGS980 family, including the CGS980SEMSS and CGS990SETSS, ERR and TURN SURFACE BURNERS OFF flash and the control signals if you set the clean cycle and forgot to turn the surface burners off. The oven will not begin cleaning while a burner is on. This is a safety interlock and not a failure, and the fix is simply to switch the burners off first.
Common causes of ERR + TURN SURFACE BURNERS OFF
- Surface burner left on when clean was set
- Burner knob not fully in the off position
- Control still seeing a burner as on
1. Turn the surface burners off. 2. Then set the clean cycle. 3. Check that every knob is fully in the off position. 4. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
- If every burner is off and the message stays, whether a knob switch is reading wrong stays unknown
- We test the knob switches and quote any repair in writing

Why won't my Café range start the clean cycle?
A surface burner is still on. Turn every burner off and set the clean cycle again, and it should begin without the message appearing a second time.
What does ERR mean here?
ERR flashes together with the message to get your attention. It is the control reminding you about the burners, not a separate failure of the oven.
What if all the burners are off?
