What Cooktop Hot / Hot Surface means

On GE, GE Profile and Café electric radiant ranges, the Cooktop Hot, Hot Surface or Burner On indicator tells you the glass cooktop is in use or still hot. Some ranges use a timer, so the light can stay on for up to 30 minutes after the last burner was turned off. Sensor-based versions go dark once the surface falls below about 150°F. Because the timer version does not measure temperature, the light may stay on even when the glass already feels cool. This is normal behavior, not an error.

Common causes of Cooktop Hot / Hot Surface

  • Time-based indicator still running after the burner was turned off
  • Surface still above roughly 150°F on a sensor-based model
  • Residual heat held by a pan or by the glass itself
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Treat the glass as hot while the light is on and keep hands, towels and plastic away from it. 2. Wait for the light to go out; on time-based models that can take up to 30 minutes. 3. Do not set items on the cooktop to speed cooling. 4. Make sure every burner knob or touch control is actually off.

! Why to stop there
  • If the indicator stays on for hours with every burner off, we check the control and sensing circuit that drives it.
  • We also check whether a burner is being switched on by a stuck knob or touch pad.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Cooktop Hot / Hot SurfaceCooktop Hot / Hot Surface questions
Why is the hot light on when the glass feels cool?

Many models use a timer rather than a temperature reading, so the light can run up to 30 minutes after the last burner was turned off. The surface may feel cool well before the light goes out.

How long should the indicator stay on?

Timer models stay lit for up to 30 minutes. Sensor models turn off when the surface drops below about 150°F. If it never goes off with all burners off, it is worth having checked.

Is it safe to wipe the cooktop while the light is on?

Wait until the light is out. Even if the glass seems cool, the indicator is there to warn you that part of the surface may still burn skin or melt plastic.
