What F49 means

F49 on 2025 and newer GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH heat pump water heaters is a control board high temperature failure. The control board manages the heat pump, elements and sensors, and it watches its own temperature. When the board runs too hot, the unit shows F49 and may shut down parts of its operation to protect itself. You may see the heater stop heating, turn off its display, or restart repeatedly.

Common causes of F49

  • Hot room or restricted airflow around the unit
  • Board cooling or heat buildup
  • Control board failure
  • Wiring or load problems raising board temperature
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Copy the model number from the label and the code from the display. 2. Clear boxes and storage away from the unit so air can move freely. 3. Make sure the room is not unusually hot. 4. Do not open the control area. Switch off at the breaker if the display behaves oddly and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • A hot room and a defective board are different problems, so we check the environment first.
  • We look at the loads connected to the control for anything pulling heat.
  • We give you a written price before replacing the board.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F49F49 questions
What can make the board too hot?

A hot, closed-in space, blocked airflow, or a problem on the board itself. We check the room and the airflow before we blame the control board.

Should I keep running the heater?

If it still makes hot water and acts normally, use it lightly until we visit. If the display flickers or the unit restarts repeatedly, switch it off at the breaker and call us.

Is the control board expensive to replace?

We give the price in writing before any work starts, and only after testing confirms the board is the cause. You decide with the number in front of you.
