What bAd linE (F12) means

On the first-generation GE GeoSpring hybrid water heater, the GEH50DEED from roughly 2009 to 2012, bAd linE, also called F12, appears when the voltage is too low at power-up. These heaters expect a 240-volt supply, and the control checks it as the unit starts. The message usually appears after a new installation or electrical work, since a unit wired for the wrong voltage or with a poor connection cannot start normally.

Common causes of bAd linE (F12)

  • Breaker type and rating feeding the heater
  • Supply connections at the unit
  • Wiring that suggests 120 volts instead of 240
  • The control's voltage-sensing input
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn off power at the breaker. 2. Read the Electrical Connections section of the owner's manual. 3. Ask your installer to verify the electrical input at the unit. 4. Leave the wiring compartment closed. Please wait for the check before switching it back on.

! Why to stop there
  • Only a measurement tells whether the house supply or the unit is the problem.
  • We verify the supply before touching the heater.
  • A reading that is fine at the breaker but low at the unit tells us the wiring between them needs attention.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
bAd linE (F12)bAd linE (F12) questions
Does bAd linE mean the heater is broken?

Often not. The message points to the electrical feed, so we check the feed and connections before looking at the heater itself, which saves you from paying for parts you do not need.

Can a standard outlet power it?

No. These units need the proper 240-volt supply. If one was connected to the wrong voltage, the message follows, and the wiring has to be corrected by the installer or an electrician.

Is it safe to retry?

We recommend keeping the breaker off until an installer has checked the wiring. Repeated attempts on a wrong supply do not help and may add stress to the control.
