What F9 means

F9 on the first-generation GE GeoSpring GEH50DEED hybrid water heater, from roughly 2009 to 2012, means the lower heating element has failed. The lower element is the larger of the two electric heating circuits at the bottom of the tank, and the control monitors it. When it does not respond properly, F9 shows. Heat pump heating and the upper element may keep you supplied, but the tank takes longer to recover.

Common causes of F9

  • Element current draw when it is called to heat
  • Element terminal connections
  • Tank filled and free of dry running
  • Control output to the lower element
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check that hot water is available and note how long it lasts. 2. Confirm the cold supply valve is open. 3. Do not run the unit if the tank was drained recently. 4. Call us to test the element.

! Why to stop there
  • The lower element, its terminals and the control output can all produce F9.
  • We test the circuit with power isolated.
  • A good element with a dead circuit points us toward terminals and the control, and the repair has a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F9F9 questions
Can I tell which element is out?

Yes, F9 is the lower one and F10 the upper. Seeing which number appears helps us bring the right parts and finish the repair in one visit when possible.

Will the water heater still make hot water?

Usually, using the heat pump and the other element. Expect longer recovery after heavy use, such as several showers back to back or a dishwasher cycle.

Is draining the tank needed?

Replacing an element does need the tank drained, which we handle. Do not drain it yourself while the unit has power, because dry elements can burn out.
