What F17 means
Code F17 on some 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series means the control sees an empty tank or an anode rod that is wired incorrectly. The anode sensing circuit looks like an open circuit in either case, so the control cannot tell the two apart. It is related to the dry tank protection, which exists because running elements without water damages them.
Common causes of F17
- Whether the tank is truly full of water
- Anode rod connection and wiring orientation
- Cold water supply and shutoff valve
- The anode sensing input on the control
1. Open a hot faucet and make sure water flows steadily, which shows the tank is full. 2. Confirm the cold water shutoff valve is fully open. 3. If the tank is full and F17 persists, contact us for service. 4. Do not reach into the unit to check the rod wiring yourself.
- After the owner confirms the tank is full, F17 leaves rod wiring or the sensing circuit as the open question.
- We inspect the rod connection and test the sensing path.
- If water flows and the rod wiring is right, the sensing circuit is what we test next.
Other Water Heater codes
Why does one code cover two different things?
The control sees the same open sensing circuit whether the tank is empty or the rod wiring is wrong. We check the tank first because it is easy, then the wiring.
Is F17 the same as F11?
They are related but not identical. F11 is the dry tank alarm, while F17 includes the anode sensing circuit. Filling the tank is the first step for both.
Should I turn the heater off?
If you suspect the tank is empty, yes, switch it off at the breaker until it is full. If the tank is full, the heater can stay on until we visit.
