What F-A means

F-A belongs to the first-generation GE GeoSpring hybrid water heater, the GEH50DEED built roughly 2009 to 2012, and it means the T4 reading is not rising. T4 is the compressor outlet temperature, and when the heat pump runs it should climb. If it stays flat, the control concludes the compressor is not producing heat the way it should. The display shows F-A, and hot water then relies more on the electric elements. The dash codes F-A to F-F do not match the plain F-numbers on the 2014-2016 units.

Common causes of F-A

  • Whether the compressor actually starts and runs
  • T4 sensor placement and connection
  • Airflow across the evaporator
  • The control's start command to the compressor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check that the air inlet and outlet are open and nothing is stored against the unit. 2. Clean the air filter. 3. Note whether you hear the compressor running. 4. Leave the sealed system and covers alone and arrange service.

! Why to stop there
  • A flat T4 may be a sensor reading problem or an actual compressor problem, which only testing separates.
  • We compare the sensor reading with the real pipe temperature.
  • T4 is compared with a reference reading, and our repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F-AF-A questions
What is T4?

T4 is the temperature sensor at the compressor outlet. During heat pump operation it should rise noticeably, so a flat reading is exactly what F-A reports to the display.

Is the compressor dead if F-A shows?

Not necessarily. A sensor, its wiring or the start circuit can produce the same reading. We test each of them before naming a part, so you are not asked to pay for the wrong repair.

Will I still have hot water?

Usually, because the electric elements can heat the tank, but it uses more energy and recovers slowly. Tell us how the water behaves when you book so we can plan accordingly.
