What F-I means

On GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series from roughly 2014 to 2016, F-I is the refrigerant leak test code, which points to a probable refrigerant leak. The control compares how the heat pump circuit behaves with what is normal, and F-I appears when the result looks like a leak. You will see weak heat pump output and the electric elements covering hot water.

Common causes of F-I

  • Refrigerant leak or low charge
  • Expansion valve behavior
  • Temperature sensing
  • Evaporator condition
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Note the code and the full model number from the rating label. 2. Keep boxes and storage away from the air inlet and outlet. 3. Do not open the housing or touch any refrigerant lines. 4. Call us for a leak check, and use the electric heating for hot water until then.

! Why to stop there
  • We separate a true leak from a reading problem.
  • We use the test results to decide whether repair makes sense.
  • You get a written price first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F-IF-I questions
Does F-I mean there is definitely a leak?

It says probable. The control compares how the circuit behaves with what it expects, and we confirm with our own testing before telling you the cause of the problem.

How is it different from F-D?

F-D is superheat too low. F-I is the leak test result. Both point toward the refrigerant side, which is why we check the two together on one visit.

Can I wait?

Hot water continues from the electric elements, but running cost is higher while the heat pump is off. We suggest booking the check rather than leaving it for months.
