What F-J means
On GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, the older GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ models from about 2014 to 2016, F-J means concurrent load high current. The control saw too much current when more than one load was on at the same time, such as the compressor and a heating element. To protect the circuit it shows F-J and may stop a load. The 2025 PF and PH models have their own code list.
Common causes of F-J
- Supply or wiring problem
- Loose connection raising current
- Heating element or compressor drawing high current
- Current sensing on the control
1. Write down the code and the full model number from the label. 2. Check that the breaker is fully on and does not feel warm. 3. Do not open covers or work on the wiring. 4. Call us and we will test the supply and the unit.
- High current can come from the supply, a connection or a load.
- We test each before replacing parts.
- We quote the repair in writing.
Other Water Heater codes
Why does F-J show up?
The control found too much current when loads overlapped. It protects the wiring and parts by stopping a load and reporting the code on the display.
Is it the same as F57?
The meaning is the same, but F-J is on the older GEH50 and GEH80 series, and F57 is on the newer PF and PH series. We keep the two separate.
What if the breaker trips?
Leave it off and call us rather than resetting it again and again. A breaker that trips repeatedly can mean a connection or load problem that needs checking.
