What F61 means
On GE Profile GeoSpring hybrid heat pump water heaters made from June 2025, such as the GEH50DEEJSC, F61 means the water in the tank is too hot. The control saw a tank temperature above its limit and shows the code while it stops adding heat. You may notice very hot water at the taps or a display that stays on F61 for a while. It is listed as a code that should clear on its own as the tank cools.
Common causes of F61
- Temperature setpoint left high
- Water not being used, so the tank stays hot
- Tank temperature sensor reading out of range
- Heating element staying on longer than needed
1. Do not use the hottest tap water until the tank cools, to avoid scalding. 2. Leave the water heater alone and let the code clear on its own. 3. Check that the temperature setting is not set to its maximum. 4. Use some hot water to draw the tank down. 5. If F61 does not clear, call us.
- If F61 stays after the tank has cooled, the sensor or the control may be misreading.
- We compare the displayed temperature with the real water temperature.
- Very hot water can scald, so we do not recommend testing it by hand.
Other Water Heater codes
Will F61 go away by itself?
It is listed as a code that should clear on its own once the tank water cools. If it stays on for a long time, something may be reading wrong and we should take a look at the unit.
Is the hot water dangerous right now?
It can scald. Be careful at every tap and mix with cold water until the tank cools. Lowering the temperature setting afterward helps keep the tank from climbing so high again.
Should I turn the water heater off?
You do not need to just because of F61. If the code lingers well beyond a cool-down, we check the temperature sensor and the control, and give you a written price before any work.
Still seeing F61?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
