What F9 means

F9 on the 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series reports a lower heating element failure. The lower element is one of the two electric elements in the tank, and the control watches it for correct operation. When it does not behave as expected, F9 appears on the display. Hot water may still be available from the heat pump and the upper element, but the tank can recover noticeably slower and may run out sooner than you are used to.

Common causes of F9

  • Whether the lower element is drawing current when the control calls for it
  • The element wiring and terminals
  • Tank condition, since a dry or sediment-heavy tank affects elements
  • The control output for the lower element
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Make sure hot water is actually reaching your faucets and nothing was drained recently. 2. Check that the cold water shutoff valve above the tank is fully open. 3. Leave the breaker on only if the tank is full; if you are unsure, switch it off at the panel. 4. Do not remove the element covers yourself.

! Why to stop there
  • The code says the lower element circuit is wrong, not whether the element, wiring or control is to blame.
  • We test the element and its supply with the power isolated, then restore it for the final check.
  • If the element tests good, we keep looking at its supply instead of selling you a new one.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F9F9 questions
Can I still get hot water with F9?

Often some, because the heat pump and upper element can keep working. Recovery is slower, and showers may run cooler than normal. Tell us how the water behaves when you call.

Is F9 the same as F10?

They are sibling codes. F9 points to the lower element and F10 to the upper element. If both appear, we check shared items such as the tank being full and the power feed.

Could a tank that was not full cause F9?

A dry tank has its own code, F11, and elements should never be powered without water. We confirm the tank is full first, then test the element.
