What OFF means
On GE, Profile and Café ranges and wall ovens with electronic oven controls, OFF means the oven refuses what you asked for. Either a self-clean cannot be set because the cavity is still too hot, or a bake or broil was tried too soon after a self-clean finished. The oven is protecting itself and you, and it is not damaged. Let it cool and then retry the setting.
Common causes of OFF
- Oven cavity still hot from a recent cycle
- Bake or broil requested soon after self-clean ended
- Door lock still engaged after cleaning
1. Leave the oven door closed and let the oven cool down. 2. Wait until the lock releases if a clean cycle just ended. 3. Set the cycle again. 4. If OFF still appears when the oven is cool, switch the breaker off for a minute or two and retry.
- If the oven is cool and OFF still shows, the temperature sensor may be reading wrong.
- We compare the sensor reading with the real cavity temperature.
- A lock that stays engaged after cooling needs a check of the lock circuit.

Why does my oven say OFF after self-clean?
The oven is still hot or the lock has not released. Trying to bake or broil right away is rejected for safety. Wait for it to cool and try again.
How long should I wait?
Wait until the oven feels cool and the door unlocks. Times vary by oven, so rely on the lock indicator and the temperature of the door, not a fixed number.
It is cold but OFF persists. Is it broken?
Possibly the sensor is misreading. We would test it and give you a written price before any work. If everything checks out, we explain what we found.
Still unsure about OFF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
