What LEAK means
On GE and GE Profile refrigerators with the XWFE RFID water filter and a Filter Status LED (side-by-side GSS25, GSE25 and PSE25, and bottom-freezer and French-door GNE, GBE and GFE, 2018 and newer), LEAK scrolling across the display means a filter leak has been detected. Water to the dispenser is disabled, the Filter Status LED flashes red and a buzzer sounds. Treat it as real water until proven otherwise.
Common causes of LEAK
- Water leaking at or around the filter
- Filter not seated correctly after installation
- Filter housing seal or connection dripping
1. Look at and wipe the filter and the area around it, since water from a filter change can set the message off. 2. Replace the filter. 3. Dry the surrounding area. 4. Watch the display for the message to clear. 5. If it returns, shut off the refrigerator water supply and call us.
- If LEAK returns after a new filter and a dry housing, water is still reaching the sensor from somewhere.
- We trace the water path from the filter head to the line and look for slow drips.
- A written price comes first, and a leak makes us prioritize the visit.

What does LEAK on my refrigerator display mean?
The refrigerator sensed a leak around the filter. Dispenser water shuts off, the LED blinks red and the buzzer goes. Wipe the area first. Wipe it dry first.
How do I fix it?
Replace the filter and wipe off the filter and surrounding area if there is water from the change. Then see whether the message clears. Do it before the floor gets wet.
Is it urgent?
Treat it carefully. If water keeps appearing, shut off the supply and call us so the floor and cabinet do not get damaged. If you find water, stop and call.
Still seeing LEAK?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
