GE GeoSpring GEH50/GEH80 Code F-E: Discharge Temperature Above the Limit

What F-E means
On GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters of the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ generation (about 2014 to 2016), F-E means the discharge temperature is above its limit, with a possible refrigerant leak. The hot refrigerant leaving the compressor has gone hotter than allowed, so the control stops the heat pump. You may see slow heating and the electric elements doing the work. The 2025 PF and PH models use different code meanings.
Common causes of F-E
- Low refrigerant or restricted flow
- Compressor operation
- Discharge temperature sensing
- Airflow around the unit
1. Write down the code and the full model number from the label. 2. Make sure nothing blocks the air flow around the unit. 3. Do not touch the refrigerant lines or open the housing. 4. Call us for a heat pump check, and use hot water normally until then.
- High discharge temperature can come from refrigerant, airflow or a sensor reading.
- We check airflow and the sensor before the sealed system.
- We quote any sealed-system work in writing.

What is the discharge temperature?
It is the temperature of the refrigerant as it leaves the compressor. The control stops the heat pump if it climbs above the limit, to protect the compressor.
Is F-E a compressor failure?
Not necessarily. A compressor failure is listed separately under F3 on these models. F-E is about the discharge temperature going above its limit, which can have other causes.
Should I turn it off?
If it behaves strangely, switch it off at the breaker. Otherwise the electric elements can cover hot water until we arrive and check the heat pump.
Still seeing F-E?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
