What F-L means

On the older GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, models GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ built about 2014 to 2016, F-L means the evaporator is not defrosting. The coil collects frost as it pulls heat from room air, and the unit is supposed to clear it. If it does not, airflow drops and the heat pump loses output. You may see ice on the coil and slow hot water recovery, with the electric elements stepping in.

Common causes of F-L

  • Defrost operation not working
  • Evaporator airflow restriction
  • Evaporator temperature sensing
  • Refrigerant condition
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Read out the code and the full model number from the rating label when you call. 2. Clear anything blocking the air inlet and outlet. 3. If you have a removable air filter, clean it. 4. Do not chip at the ice or open the housing. Call us to check the defrost operation.

! Why to stop there
  • Not defrosting can be a control or sensor matter, or a refrigerant matter.
  • We check airflow and defrost operation first.
  • Sealed-system work is quoted first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F-LF-L questions
How is F-L different from F-C?

F-C is an evaporator that is not frost free, with a probable leak. F-L is an evaporator that is not defrosting. The first points to refrigerant, the second to the defrost operation.

Can I defrost it myself?

We do not recommend it. Chipping ice or opening the housing can damage the coil, and the cause of the frost would still be there when it returns.

Will I have hot water?

Yes, using the electric elements, at a higher running cost. Recovery after heavy use may be slower, so it is worth scheduling the check promptly.
