What F2 means
On the older GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ models from about 2014 to 2016, F2 means the T2 tank temperature sensor has failed. T2 reports temperature at one level of the tank, and the control needs it to manage heating. These F codes are specific to this older generation and differ from the 2025 PF and PH series. You may see water that is too cool or too hot, or uneven heating.
Common causes of F2
- T2 sensor and its connector
- Sensor lead damage
- Control board sensor input
1. Note the code and the full model number from the label. 2. Check that the breaker is on. 3. Leave covers and wires alone, because the sensor sits inside the unit. 4. Test faucet temperature carefully, and call us to check the sensor and its plug.
- We test the sensor circuit before replacing the sensor.
- We check the connector in case it is only loose.
- You get a written price first.
Other Water Heater codes
Does F2 mean the same as F31?
The meaning is similar, but F2 is on the older GEH50 and GEH80 series, and F31 is the T2 sensor on the newer PF and PH series. We keep them separate.
Is hot water safe?
With care. The control may not see the tank temperature correctly, so test water at the tap before using it and keep children away from hot faucets.
Is replacement quick?
Usually one visit once the sensor is confirmed bad. We replace it, give you the price in writing first, and cover our workmanship for 30 days.
Still seeing F2?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
