What F3 means
On the older GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, models GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ built around 2014 to 2016, F3 is listed as a compressor failure. The compressor is the sealed pump at the heart of the heat pump. When the control finds it not running as expected, the heat pump stops and the electric elements carry the load. You may notice no compressor sound, slow heating, and higher power use.
Common causes of F3
- Compressor start or run circuit
- Wiring or relay to the compressor
- Compressor itself
- Refrigerant circuit condition
1. Take a photo of the display and the label with the full model number. 2. Make sure the air inlet and outlet are clear. 3. Do not open the housing. 4. Use the electric elements for hot water, and call us to check the compressor circuit.
- Compressor failures can come from the circuit around it or from the compressor itself.
- We test the circuit first.
- A compressor repair on a unit this age is quoted in writing, with an honest view.

How is F3 related to F14?
The idea is related, but F3 is on the older GEH50 and GEH80 series, and F14 is on the newer PF and PH series. The two lists are kept separate.
Is there any hot water in the meantime?
Not as much as usual. The electric elements can heat the tank, at a higher running cost, and recovery after heavy use may be slower until the heat pump runs again.
Is it worth repairing?
It depends on the cause and the age of the unit. We give you a written price and an honest view before you decide, and the work carries our 30-day warranty.
