What F2 means

F2 on the first-generation GE GeoSpring GEH50DEED hybrid water heater, from about 2009 to 2012, means the T2 tank temperature sensor has failed. T2 tells the control how hot the water in the tank is, which decides when the heat pump and elements start and stop. Without a reliable T2 reading, the control cannot manage heating properly, so it shows F2. Water may turn lukewarm or overly hot depending on how the sensor is misreading.

Common causes of F2

  • T2 sensor connector and wiring
  • Sensor reading against actual tank temperature
  • Moisture or corrosion at the sensor terminals
  • The control's T2 input
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check hot water temperature at a faucet and tell us whether it is cool or very hot. 2. If the water is scalding, switch the heater off at the breaker. 3. Leave the covers closed. 4. Schedule service so the sensor can be tested.

! Why to stop there
  • A bad tank reading may come from the sensor, its wire or the control input.
  • We compare the sensor against a known tank temperature.
  • The tank sensor is checked against a known water temperature before it is replaced.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F2F2 questions
Why is my water too hot or too cool?

The control relies on T2 to know when to heat. A sensor that reads wrong can cause it to heat too little or keep heating, so tell us what you notice at the faucet.

Is F2 the same as F5 to F8?

No. F2 is the tank sensor on this first generation, while F5 to F8 are refrigeration sensors. They sit in different places and serve different purposes.

Is overheating possible?

The tank has separate protection devices, but we do not leave a sensor error uninspected. Switch the heater off at the breaker if the water is dangerously hot.
