What HS means

On GE built-in room air conditioners with electric heat in the AJCQ and AKCQ series, HS means an electric heating sensor error. The control cannot read the temperature of the heating section reliably, so it may stop heating to stay safe. Full model numbers include the AJCQ10ACH and the AKCQ10ACJ. Cooling may still run, because HS concerns the heating side. HS appears on the display.

Common causes of HS

  • Electric heat sensor reading outside the expected range
  • Sensor connection at the control
  • Heating section not getting enough airflow
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the unit, then plug it back in. 2. Make sure the air filter is clean and the grille is not blocked. 3. If HS repeats, leave the heat off and call for service. 4. Use cooling or fan only until it has been checked.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the sensor, its wiring or the control is the cause stays unknown from the display
  • We test the sensor and the airflow across the heating section, then quote the repair in writing
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
HSHS questions
What does HS mean on my GE built-in AC?

It means an electric heating sensor error. The control cannot trust the temperature reading from the heating section, so it may shut heating down to protect the unit.

Can I still use cooling with HS showing?

Often yes, since HS concerns the heating side. But if the unit acts oddly in any mode, leave it off until it has been checked, and tell us which modes still run.

Should I try the electric heat again after HS?

You can unplug and restart once. If HS comes back, stop using the heat so the heating section is not run without a trustworthy reading, and call us to test it.
