What F6 means

On GE and Profile microwaves, including over-the-range and countertop models such as the JVM3160, JVM7195, JES1657 and PVM9179 series, F6 means the temperature probe circuit is shorted. The probe plugs into a socket on the oven wall and feeds the temp-cook function. A shorted reading may come from the probe, its cord or the socket. You will see F6 on the display. On Advantium 240V speedcook ovens the same characters mean something else, a high cavity temperature, which has its own page.

Common causes of F6

  • Probe cord damaged or pinched
  • Probe socket damp or damaged
  • Probe circuit shorted inside the oven
  • Control board misreading the probe input
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the temperature probe from the oven wall socket and set it aside. 2. Dry the socket if it looks damp. 3. Switch the breaker or fuse off for 30 seconds, then switch it on. 4. Try a timed heating test without the probe. 5. If F6 comes back, arrange a service call.

! Why to stop there
  • A probe set aside that still gives F6 points to the socket or the control.
  • We test the probe, socket and control one by one.
  • We quote in writing before any work starts.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F6F6 questions
Why is my GE microwave showing F6?

The temperature probe circuit is shorted. This involves the probe, its cord or the wall socket, and it affects the temp-cook function. Timed cooking may still work.

Does F6 mean the same on Advantium ovens?

No. On Advantium 240V speedcook ovens, F6 means a high cavity temperature. On a microwave of the listed series, it means the probe is shorted. Always match the code to your oven type.

Can I still microwave with F6?

Try a timed heating test with the probe unplugged. If heating works, the problem is likely in the probe circuit, but we should still check it. A clean test helps us.
