What Probe means

On GE and Profile microwaves, including over-the-range and countertop models such as the JVM3160, JVM7195, JES1657 and PVM9179 series, the message Probe appears when you start a temp-cook function and the temperature probe is open or not plugged in. The oven needs the probe to know when the food reaches the set temperature. You will see the word on the display and the oven will not begin the temp-cook mode until the probe is in place.

Common causes of Probe

  • Probe not plugged into the oven wall socket
  • Probe not inserted into the food
  • Probe cord or plug damaged
  • Socket dirty or damp
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Push the probe plug firmly into the socket on the oven wall. 2. Push the probe tip into the food. 3. Close the door without pinching the cord. 4. Start the temp-cook function again. 5. If the message remains, try a timed cook instead.

! Why to stop there
  • A seated probe that still shows the message may mean a damaged probe or socket.
  • We test the probe and socket before replacing anything.
  • We give a written price first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
ProbeProbe questions
What does Probe mean on my GE microwave?

The temperature probe is open or not plugged in while you are using a temp-cook function. The oven cannot read the food temperature without it. It will not start that mode.

How do I fix the Probe message?

Push the probe plug firmly into the oven wall socket and the probe tip into the food. Then start the temp-cook function again. Close the door gently on the cord.

Is Probe the same as F6?

No. Probe is a prompt to plug it in. F6 on these microwaves reports a shorted probe circuit, which needs testing. Probe is the easy one.
