What Hood turns on by itself means
On GE Café Series hoods, GE and GE Profile UVW models, and glass slide-out hoods, the blower can start on its own. The auto heat sensor turns the blower on if excess heat builds up around the hood, for example from a pan left on high or from heat rising from the oven. This is normal safety behavior, not an error. The fan usually runs until the area cools and then switches off by itself.
Common causes of Hood turns on by itself
- Auto heat sensor reacting to heat from cooking below the hood
- Heat from an oven or a pan left on a high setting
- Warm kitchen air collecting around the hood
1. Check the cooktop and oven for anything left on. 2. Let the hood run until the area cools; it turns off on its own. 3. Keep the area under the hood clear of heat-producing items. 4. Make sure grease filters are clean for good airflow.
- If the blower runs when nothing is hot, we check the heat sensor and the control that switches the fan.
- We also check for other heat sources near the hood.
Why did my hood fan start by itself?
The auto heat sensor turns the blower on when excess heat builds up around the hood. It is a safety feature and does not mean the hood is broken.
Can I stop it from turning on?
The sensor is part of the hood's safety design. Cooling the area under the hood is the way to stop it, and the blower shuts off after things cool down.
When is it a problem?
If the fan keeps starting while the kitchen is cool and nothing is cooking, the sensor or control may be reading wrongly. We can test it.
