What HOT means
On GE Profile and Café ranges with Steam Clean, including the PS960SLSS, PHS930SLSS, JS760SLSS, PHB920SJSS and CHS900P2MS1, a flashing HOT means the oven will not steam clean because the oven is too hot. The steam clean cycle only works from a cooler starting point, so the control refuses to begin. It is a normal protective message, and the oven is not damaged. Nothing needs to be repaired if the oven was just in use.
Common causes of HOT
- Oven still hot from earlier cooking
- Steam clean started too soon after baking
- Door left shut trapping heat
1. Allow the oven to cool to room temperature. 2. Reset the controls. 3. Start Steam Clean again. 4. Keep the door closed while it cools unless you need to remove racks or pans. 5. If you smell gas on a gas model, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
- If the oven is cold and HOT still flashes, whether the oven sensor reads wrong stays unknown
- We check the temperature sensor and tell you if the range is fine

Why does my range flash HOT when I try Steam Clean?
The oven is too hot to start the cycle. Let it cool to room temperature, reset the controls and try again, and the cycle should begin normally.
How long should I wait before trying again?
Until the oven has cooled to room temperature. Leaving the door open a little can speed that up, though how long it takes depends on what you baked.
Is a flashing HOT an error?
No. It is a message that the starting conditions are not met. It only becomes a concern if the oven is cold and it keeps flashing, which would point to a sensor reading wrong.
Still unsure about HOT?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
