What bAd linE (F12) means
On 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series, bAd linE, also listed as F12, means the voltage was too low when the unit powered up. These water heaters are designed for a 240-volt feed, and the control checks it at start-up. Instead of normal operation you will see the bAd linE message on the display. It usually shows up on a new installation, after electrical work, or after a power event.
Common causes of bAd linE (F12)
- Whether the unit is wired to a proper 240-volt two-pole breaker
- Loose or undersized supply connections at the unit
- Breaker condition and a possible weak or tripped pole
- The control's voltage-sensing input
1. Turn off power to the water heater at the breaker. 2. Read the Electrical Connections section of the owner's manual. 3. Have the installer or an electrician verify the 240-volt electrical input. 4. Do not open the unit's wiring compartment yourself.
- Low voltage at power-up can come from the house wiring or from the unit, and only measuring tells which.
- We verify the supply before touching the water heater itself.
- If the supply measures correct, the heater's own voltage sensing becomes the next suspect.
Other Water Heater codes
Is bAd linE the same as F12?
Yes. The display may show the words bAd linE, while the code list shows F12. Both describe the same low-voltage condition detected when the water heater powers up, so they are handled the same way.
Could my breaker be the cause?
It can be. A two-pole breaker with one weak side may deliver less than 240 volts to the heater, so we check the supply at the unit before judging the heater itself or ordering any parts.
Is it dangerous to leave it on?
We recommend shutting it off at the breaker until the supply is verified, because incorrect wiring is a safety matter and the heater may not heat properly while the voltage is wrong.
