What F-F means
On older GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ models built around 2014 to 2016, F-F means the electronic expansion valve is out of range, with a probable refrigerant leak. The valve meters refrigerant into the evaporator, and when it runs past its limits the control stops the heat pump. The electric elements usually keep supplying some hot water. The same letters mean something else on the newer PF and PH units.
Common causes of F-F
- Refrigerant low because of a probable leak
- Electronic expansion valve operation
- Valve wiring
- Evaporator sensing
1. Note the code and the full model number from the rating label. 2. Keep the air inlet and outlet clear of storage. 3. Do not open the unit or handle the refrigerant lines. 4. Call us to test the valve and look for a leak.
- The valve may be responding to a leak rather than failing itself.
- We test the valve before replacing it.
- We quote sealed-system repairs in writing first.
Other Water Heater codes
What does the expansion valve do?
It meters refrigerant into the evaporator and adjusts as conditions change. F-F means it moved outside its expected range, which the control treats as a probable refrigerant leak.
Is F-F the same as F-C?
No. F-C is an evaporator that is not frost free. F-F is the valve out of range. Both can involve a possible leak, so we look at them together.
Can I keep using it?
Yes for hot water through the electric elements, at a higher running cost. The heat pump may stay off until we repair it, and we quote the work in writing first.
Still seeing F-F?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
