What F10 means
Seeing F10 on a 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heater from the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ or GEH80DFEJ series means the control has found a problem with the upper heating element. The upper element heats the top of the tank and supports the heat pump during heavy demand. With F10 on the display, you may notice that the water starts hot but runs out faster, or that recovery after heavy use takes longer than before.
Common causes of F10
- Whether the upper element draws current when called
- Element terminals and the wiring to them
- Thermostat or temperature input feeding the upper element circuit
- The control output for the upper element
1. Run a hot faucet briefly to see whether water is still warm. 2. Confirm the cold water shutoff above the tank is fully open. 3. If the unit has been drained at any point, leave it off at the breaker until the tank is full. 4. Keep the covers on; the element wiring is 240-volt.
- F10 names the circuit, so the element, its wiring and the control all stay possible until we test.
- We check each with power isolated and verify the result under load.
- A tank that never ran dry is a different story from one that did, so we ask about its history.
Other Water Heater codes
Does F10 mean I need a new water heater?
Not necessarily. A single element circuit is a contained repair in many cases. We test first and give you a written price, so you can compare it with replacing the unit.
Why is my hot water running out quickly?
With the upper element not working, the unit relies more on the heat pump, which heats more slowly. That can leave less hot water at the top of the tank during busy mornings.
Can F10 clear by itself?
It can disappear if the condition was momentary, but a repeating F10 means the circuit still has a problem. Tell us how often it returns.
Still seeing F10?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
