What F14 means

F14 on GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH series heat pump water heaters from 2025 on is listed as a compressor failure or a discharge temperature that is too high. The compressor is the sealed pump in the heat pump circuit, and the control watches the temperature of the hot refrigerant leaving it. When that reading is out of bounds, the heat pump stops. You may then see slow heating, a quiet unit with no compressor hum, or backup elements doing all the work.

Common causes of F14

  • Compressor drive or start circuit
  • Discharge temperature sensing
  • Airflow around the unit being restricted
  • Refrigerant circuit condition
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Write down the code and the model number. 2. Make sure nothing is stacked against the unit and the air inlet and outlet are open. 3. If the unit has a removable air filter, check that it is not clogged. 4. Leave the sealed system alone and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • The cause may be electrical, a sensor reading, or the refrigerant circuit, and the code does not say which.
  • We check airflow and the temperature readings before deciding on the repair.
  • Any work on the sealed system is quoted in writing first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F14F14 questions
Can the water heater still make hot water?

Often yes, using the backup heating elements, which costs more to run. Hot water may be slower, so it helps to book the heat pump check soon.

Is a hot room the problem?

It can contribute if airflow is blocked, but the code means the control saw a compressor problem or a high discharge temperature. We check airflow first and then the compressor side.

Should I switch it off?

If it keeps cycling or you hear unusual noises, switch it off at the breaker and call us. Otherwise the elements can usually cover you until we arrive.
