What F19 means

F19 on GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH series heat pump water heaters (2025 and newer) means the control has detected a runaway heat source. In plain terms, the tank is getting hotter than the control is asking for, so heating is not shutting off the way it should. This can lead to very hot water at the faucets and a pressure and temperature relief valve that may discharge. The control shows the code to warn that heating is out of control.

Common causes of F19

  • A heating element staying energized
  • Control board output not switching off
  • Tank temperature sensor misreading
  • Limit device not opening
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the water heater off at its breaker. 2. Keep hot water use to a minimum and keep children away from taps. 3. If water is dripping from the relief valve discharge pipe, do not cap it. 4. Call us. Do not open any covers.

! Why to stop there
  • We need to learn whether a stuck output or a wrong sensor reading caused the overheating.
  • The tank temperature and the relief valve are checked together.
  • We quote the price in writing before any repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F19F19 questions
Is F19 an emergency?

Treat it seriously. Turn off the breaker for the water heater and call us. Overheated water can scald, and it can also put stress on the relief valve and the tank.

Why is my relief pipe dripping?

The relief valve opens when pressure or temperature gets too high. With a runaway heat source that can happen, so we inspect the whole system and not just the valve itself.

Can I turn it back on after a while?

We would not. Leave the breaker off until we find out why the heat source ran past its limit, because turning it back on could repeat the same overheating.
