What F31 means
F31 on 2025-and-newer GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH water heaters is the T2 tank temperature sensor failure, open or shorted. T2 works with T1 to give the control a picture of tank temperature at different heights. A bad T2 reading means the control cannot trust its own temperature data. You might notice water that does not get as hot as set, heating that seems to cycle oddly, or the unit falling back to a protective mode.
Common causes of F31
- T2 sensor and its connector
- Sensor lead damage
- Control board sensor input
1. Note the code and the model number from the rating label. 2. Make sure the water heater breaker is on and the display has power. 3. Leave all covers and sensor leads alone, since the sensor sits inside the unit near the tank. 4. Use only the hot water you need and call us for a sensor check.
- The T2 reading must be compared with the T1 reading to see which one is wrong.
- We test the sensor circuit before ordering a part.
- A written price comes before any repair.

How does F31 relate to F30?
They are related but not the same. F30 is the T1 sensor and F31 is the T2 sensor. We check both because the control compares the two readings against each other.
Will my water get too hot?
It can in some cases, because the control may be missing part of the picture of the tank. Test the temperature at the tap before use and avoid scalding.
How long is the repair?
Usually one visit once the sensor is confirmed bad. We replace it, and the work carries our 30-day workmanship warranty, with the price given to you in writing first.
