GE GeoSpring GEH50DFEJ Code F4: Heat pump fan failure

What F4 means
On the 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series, F4 means the control has detected a fan failure. That fan moves room air across the heat pump's evaporator, so the heat pump section cannot gather heat the way it should. You will see F4 on the display, and the tank may heat more slowly than usual. The same F-number is read differently on the newer PF and PH platform, so this page covers only the earlier series.
Common causes of F4
- Fan wiring and the connector at the control
- Whether the fan motor turns freely and draws normally
- Anything rubbing or blocking the fan blades
- The control output that drives the fan
1. Look at the air inlet and outlet and move anything stacked against the unit. 2. Clean the air filter the way the owner's manual describes. 3. Write down or photograph the display so we know exactly what it shows. 4. Leave the covers closed; the fan sits behind panels that carry 240-volt wiring.
- A code alone cannot tell us whether the motor, its wiring or the control is responsible.
- We watch the fan start and run before any part is ordered.
- Once the fan is confirmed, we quote the repair in writing before touching a part.
Other Water Heater codes
Can I keep using hot water with F4 showing?
Usually yes, since the electric heating side is separate from the fan. Expect slower recovery and a higher energy draw until the heat pump section runs again. If the water turns cold, tell us when you call.
Is F4 the same as F14 on my water heater?
No. F14 is the dirty filter message and can be cleared by cleaning the filter. F4 points to the fan itself, so cleaning the filter alone will not remove it.
Does F4 mean the sealed system is leaking?
Not on its own. The code names the fan, not the refrigerant circuit. We confirm the fan first and look further only if the readings point elsewhere.
Still seeing F4?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
