What F47 means

On GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH series heat pump water heaters (2025 and newer), F47 is a seal system vapor lock failure. In plain words, the refrigerant circuit is not moving the way it should, and the control has stopped the heat pump to protect it. Owners usually see little or no heat pump output, a compressor that is quiet or short cycling, and electric elements carrying the load. It is a sealed-system condition, not a filter or settings issue.

Common causes of F47

  • Refrigerant flow interruption in the sealed system
  • Compressor or valve operation
  • Refrigerant charge condition
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Note the code and the model number from the rating label. 2. Make sure the air inlet and outlet are clear of boxes and storage. 3. Leave the sealed system and all covers alone. 4. Use the hot water you need from the electric elements and call us to evaluate the heat pump.

! Why to stop there
  • The code points to the sealed system, but not to a single part.
  • We test heat pump behavior before recommending any repair.
  • If sealed-system work is needed, you get the price in writing first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F47F47 questions
What is a vapor lock?

It is a condition where refrigerant is not circulating properly in the sealed system. The control detects it and shuts the heat pump down so the compressor is not damaged.

Can I clear it myself?

We would not try. There are no owner steps for a sealed-system condition, and opening the unit is unsafe because of the high voltage and the refrigerant circuit inside.

Do I need to turn the unit off?

Not necessarily. The electric elements can supply hot water, though at a higher running cost. If you hear unusual noises or the unit cycles oddly, switch it off and call us.
