What Err 1, Err 3, Err 4, Err 5 means
On the GE smart water softener GXSHC40N with the motorized water shutoff valve (WiFi Connect, 2020 and newer), Err 1, Err 3, Err 4 and Err 5 are grouped together as an electrical problem in the control. The usual reading is that wiring has worked loose inside the control. The display shows one of those codes and the softener may stop regenerating until the connection is restored.
Common causes of Err 1, Err 3, Err 4, Err 5
- Wiring worked loose at the electronic board or switch
- Incorrectly seated connector inside the control
- Control board that still reports an error after the wiring is sound
1. Unplug the external power supply. 2. Release the side clips and remove the control cover only while the supply is unplugged. 3. Look for loose or incorrect wiring at the board or switch and reseat what is plainly loose. 4. Put the cover back, plug in the transformer and wait 8 minutes. If the code reappears, stop and call us.
- A code that returns after the 8-minute wait means the wiring was not the whole story.
- We check each connector, the switch signal and the board in that order.
- Opening the control is not something we want you to repeat; we handle it and give a written price first.
Other Water Softener & Filtration codes
Are Err 1, 3, 4 and 5 four different problems?
The manual groups them as one electrical problem in the control, with loose wiring the likely cause. We test each connection to see which one it is.
Do I have to open the control?
The manual describes it with the power supply unplugged. If you are not comfortable, leave it to us. It is a quick look for a technician.
Why wait 8 minutes?
The control needs that time after power returns to run its own check. If the code is still there afterwards, the cause was not corrected.
