What DAYS TO EMPTY flashing means
On GE SmartWater water softeners with electronic demand control, such as the GXSH40V and GXSH45V, DAYS TO EMPTY flashing together with the blue light is the low salt signal. When the count drops to 15, the blue light and DAYS TO EMPTY flash every second and the alarm beeps every 30 seconds between 8 AM and 8 PM. This is a reminder, not a failure: the softener is simply running low on salt.
Common causes of DAYS TO EMPTY flashing
- Salt level in the brine tank
- Whether the SALT LEVEL setting was updated after the last refill
- Salt bridging or hard crust in the tank
- Brine tank water level
1. Press any button to stop the beeping. 2. Add salt to the brine tank. 3. Reset the SALT LEVEL on the control, and DAYS TO EMPTY resets with it. 4. If the signal returns right after refilling, call us.
- If salt is full but the count stays low, the setting or a salt bridge may be the issue.
- We check the salt bed and the control's count.
- If the tank is full and water is still hard, we look for a salt bridge.

Why does it beep?
It reminds you the salt is low. Pressing any button silences it, and it stays quiet outside the hours of 8 AM to 8 PM, so you may notice it only in the daytime.
I added salt and it still flashes. Why?
The control counts from the SALT LEVEL setting. If you did not reset it after refilling, it still thinks the tank is low, so reset it and DAYS TO EMPTY updates.
What if the tank is full but the water is hard?
A salt bridge or a regeneration problem could be responsible. We check the salt bed, the brine tank and the cycle, and give you a written price first.
