What ERR 04 means
On older GE water softeners from the GXSF27E, GXSF31E and GXSF40H generation, ERR 04 is one of the numbered entries in the diagnostic chart on the electronic control. It points to the position switch, the wiring harness that carries its signal, or the control itself. The display shows the code and the softener may stop regenerating on schedule, so hard water can reach the house.
Common causes of ERR 04
- Loose or misseated wiring at the board or the position switch
- Position switch not reporting the valve location correctly
- Wiring harness between the switch and the control
- Control board not reading the switch signal
1. Unplug the transformer from the outlet. 2. Look for any loose or incorrectly seated wiring you can see without opening anything that is live. 3. Plug the transformer back in. 4. Wait at least 6 minutes. If the code returns, the cause was not corrected and the softener needs service.
- A code that comes back after the 6-minute wait means the switch, harness or control still has a problem.
- We test the switch signal and the harness before we say which part is involved.
- You get a written price before any repair starts.

What does ERR 04 mean on my GE softener?
It points to the position switch, its wiring harness or the control. The control cannot confirm where the valve is, so it flags the code instead of guessing.
Can I clear ERR 04 myself?
You can unplug the transformer, correct what is obviously loose, plug it in and wait at least 6 minutes. If the cause was not corrected, the code simply returns.
Is my water still softened?
Possibly not. A softener that cannot confirm valve position may skip regeneration, so you may notice hard water again. We test the switch and harness to find the cause.
Still seeing ERR 04?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
