What ERR 02 means
ERR 02 appears on older GE water softeners with a numbered error chart, such as the GXSF27E, GXSF31E and GXSF40H from roughly 2005 to 2015. It points to a possible defect in the position switch or in the control. The position switch tells the control where the valve is in its cycle, and if the control cannot read that, it posts ERR 02. Newer V-series units show only a plain Err, so the number belongs to the older generation.
Common causes of ERR 02
- Position switch and its connection
- Wiring near the switch
- Control board
- Motor reaching the position
1. Unplug the transformer. 2. Correct loose or incorrect wiring at the board or switch. 3. Plug the transformer in and wait at least 6 minutes. 4. If ERR 02 comes back, call us. Keep the brine tank lid closed while you wait, and avoid touching the valve. Water use is fine meanwhile.
- The switch, wiring or the board can each cause ERR 02.
- We test the switch signal.
- We check the signal from the position switch through a full cycle before anything is replaced.

What does the position switch do?
It tells the control where the valve is in its cycle. When that signal is missing or unreadable, the control cannot confirm the regeneration steps and reports ERR 02.
Will water still flow?
Usually yes, but the softener may not regenerate properly, so the water can turn hard. Tell us if you notice spotting, scale or soap that does not lather.
Is it urgent?
It is not an emergency. Still, a softener that cannot track its cycle will not protect your plumbing and fixtures, so we suggest booking a visit within days.
Still seeing ERR 02?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
