What ERR 03 means

ERR 03 appears on older GE water softeners with a numbered error chart, such as the GXSF27E, GXSF31E and GXSF40H from roughly 2005 to 2015. It points to a possible defect in the motor, in the wiring harness, or in the control. Where ERR 01 also names the switch, ERR 03 narrows toward the motor drive. The display holds ERR 03 until it is cleared, and newer V-series units show only Err.

✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the transformer. 2. Correct loose or incorrect wiring at the board. 3. Plug the transformer in and wait at least 6 minutes. 4. If ERR 03 returns, call us. Keep the brine tank lid closed while you wait, and avoid touching the valve or the motor. Water use is fine meanwhile.

! Why to stop there

If ERR 03 returns after the wait, the cause remains.
We test the motor and the harness before the control.
When the motor turns freely, the harness and control get the next round of testing.

Is ERR 03 the motor?

It could be the motor, or the harness that feeds it. The code lists both along with the control, which is why we test each before naming a part.

Can I run the softener?

Water still flows, but softening may be missed while the error is active. Hard water, spotting and scale are the signs to watch for until we repair it.

How long does the reset take?

Unplug the transformer, correct any loose wiring, plug it back in and wait at least 6 minutes. If the code returns, the cause was not corrected and we should look.
