What 4 means
On the newer GE Zoneline AZ95 single-package vertical units (AZ95E and AZ95H), code 4 means an indoor thermistor is not reporting valid temperatures. The control depends on these sensors to know the room and coil conditions. While the error is active, cooling and heat pump operation are off, and the unit falls back to resistance heat and the fan only. On the older AZ90 and AZ91 generation, code 4 is a different sensor entirely.
Common causes of 4
- Indoor thermistor open, shorted or reading out of range
- Sensor connection at the control
- Control misreading a good sensor
1. Press and hold MODE, then press AUX, to read the stored errors; -- means none. 2. Tapping AUX deletes the entries; choose any other key to keep them. 3. Try heat or fan mode and see whether the room still gets air. 4. Make sure the front grille is free of obstructions. 5. Report a returning code 4 to your property manager rather than opening the unit.
- A failed sensor and a connection problem produce the same reading error.
- We measure the thermistor response and inspect its connection.
- Work is quoted in writing first and carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
Why does the unit lose cooling with code 4?
Without valid temperature readings the control cannot manage the cooling cycle safely, so it holds the compressor off and offers only fan and resistance heat.
Is code 4 urgent in a rental unit?
A guest or resident loses cooling, so it is worth reporting soon. The unit is not in a safety lockout, but comfort is limited to heat and fan.
Does the older AZ90 code 4 mean the same?
No. There it refers to an indoor coil temperature sensor and the unit keeps operating on a default value. The AZ95 version is stricter. Housekeeping or front desk staff can check the label.
Still seeing 4?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
