What 6 means
On GE Zoneline AZ90 and AZ91 single-package vertical units, including the AZ90E09D2C, code 6 means the outdoor coil has climbed above 175°F. The unit shuts down for 5 minutes and retries. After three failed attempts, operation is locked out. The room will stop cooling. Common causes are poor airflow across the outdoor side. The newer AZ95 generation uses code 6 for a compressor temperature-change error.
Common causes of 6
- Outdoor coil airflow restricted
- Debris or blockage at the outdoor grille
- Outside fan or sealed system condition
1. ENTER opens the code history; SCROLL advances through the entries. 2. Switch the unit off and let it rest. 3. From outside, if safe, check that the exterior grille is not blocked by leaves, dirt or a covering. 4. Try the unit again after it has cooled. 5. If it locks out again, leave it off and report it; hold ENTER and SCROLL for 3 to 6 seconds to clear history after service.
- An overheated coil can come from airflow, the outside fan or the cooling circuit.
- We check the outdoor air path first, then fan and sealed system operation.
- The price is written before work begins, with a 30-day workmanship warranty on the repair.

What happens after three retries?
The unit locks out its operation, so it will not run until the problem is cleared. Clearing history alone will not fix the cause. Clearing the history does not fix the cause.
Can a covered grille cause this?
Yes, restricted outdoor airflow is a common reason for a hot coil. Make sure nothing covers or blocks the exterior grille. Keep leaves and debris away from it.
Is the AZ95 code 6 related?
No. The AZ95 code 6 means no temperature change after one minute of compressor running, which is a separate condition. Check the label for the model generation.
