What 5 means
On GE Zoneline AZ90 and AZ91 single-package vertical units, such as the AZ91H09D2C, code 5 means the outdoor coil temperature sensor is open or shorted. The control defaults to 20°F and, if electric heat is available, uses it. That can make heating costlier and affects defrost decisions on heat pump models. The newer AZ95 generation uses code 5 for an outside thermistor, with a different result.
Common causes of 5
- Outdoor coil sensor open or shorted
- Sensor wiring exposed to weather
- Sensor connection at the control
1. Press ENTER for the list of stored codes and keep pressing SCROLL to move along it. 2. Confirm the room still warms and cools. 3. Look at the outside grille, if you can do so safely, for ice or debris. 4. Ask your property manager to arrange a check if the code stays. 5. Hold ENTER and SCROLL for 3 to 6 seconds after service to clear history.
- Weather and age can both affect an outdoor sensor, and the display alone cannot tell which.
- We test the outdoor sensor and inspect its wiring.
- We write the price down before work, and a 30-day workmanship warranty applies.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
Why does the unit use electric heat with code 5?
The control assumes the outdoor coil is at 20°F, so it relies on electric heat where it is available. Heat pump models may also rely on that sensor to time defrost.
Will my electric bill go up?
Electric heat uses more power than the heat pump, so heating may cost more while the code stays active. Housekeeping can mention it if a room feels costly or dry.
Is code 5 on AZ95 the same?
No. On the newer AZ95 line, code 5 removes cooling and heat pump operation. The AZ90 and AZ91 version keeps the unit going on a default.
