What FRZ means

On GE Zoneline single-package vertical units of the AZ90/AZ91 generation, FRZ shows while room freeze protection is active, the same condition the control stores as error 10. The unit runs high fan together with electric heat until the room has warmed back to 46°F. It happens only on units with electric heat. This is a protective mode that keeps pipes and fixtures in a very cold room from freezing, so the unit is doing its job.

Common causes of FRZ

  • Room air dropped to the freeze protection point
  • Room temperature sensor reading too low
  • Doors or windows left open to the cold
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Leave the unit powered so the protection can finish its work. 2. Close doors and windows in the room so it warms faster. 3. Keep the air outlet clear of furniture and curtains. 4. If FRZ stays on in a room that feels warm, press ENTER, read the stored codes and write them down for us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the room is really that cold or the room sensor reads low stays unknown until we check it
  • We compare the unit's room reading with a known air temperature and tell you if it is behaving correctly
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
FRZFRZ questions
Why is my AZ90 blowing heat when I did not ask for it?

FRZ means room freeze protection is running. The unit uses high fan and electric heat until the room reaches 46°F, then returns to whatever mode it was in before. You do not need to do anything.

Is FRZ an error that needs fixing?

Not by itself. It is a protective mode that starts when the room gets very cold. It becomes a concern only if it shows in a room that is clearly warm, which would suggest a sensor reading too low.

Does FRZ happen on every Zoneline unit?

No. It applies only to units with electric heat, because the protection relies on the electric elements to bring the room back up to temperature. A cooling-only unit has nothing to run in this mode.
