What Galveston homes change about a GE repair

Local housing, power events, water conditions, and installation styles all affect how we approach GE diagnostics here.

Housing

Historic districts and raised houses

The island's historic neighborhoods include the 463-building East End district and the Silk Stocking district, many standing on ground raised following the 1900 storm. Since Ike, owners in the West End have frequently rebuilt on stilts.

Getting an appliance in or out may mean stairs, a raised kitchen or old wiring. Tell us the floor and the access when you book.

Water

Water from the mainland

At Texas City, the Gulf Coast Water Authority's Thomas S. Mackey plant receives Brazos River water by canal; mains on the railroad bridge then carry it to Galveston. A break along that route can interrupt supply.

Should a boil-water notice be issued, flush the refrigerator dispenser and throw out ice once it ends. Tell us if a filter clogs sooner than expected.

Weather & power

Ike and salt air

Hurricane Ike struck in September 2008, bringing a surge as high as 17 feet. Five or six feet of water stood in the East End, and four of every five homes in the city were damaged.

Salt air does slow damage as well, rusting condenser coils, hinges and exposed screws. Clean the coils and tell us about rust before it spreads.

Galveston Island has restored Victorians, raised beach houses and condos, and many have stairs or elevators. Tell us the floor and who meets us. Post a photo of the label with your request, and a three-hour window comes with our reply.

Salt air can corrode a condenser coil, a hinge or a connection long before a part fails. If the breaker flips off every time you run it, an electrician needs to clear the circuit before repairs go further. Weak water at every faucet is a plumber’s or utility’s matter, while one slow appliance gets its inlet checked by us.
