A Burning Smell From Your GE Dryer: What to Do Right Away
A hot, burning or scorched smell from a dryer deserves a pause, not a second load. Here is what to do first, what is usually behind it and when to leave it off.
If you smell burning while your GE dryer runs, stop the cycle, unplug it and leave the door closed. Lint, fabric and sometimes a loose object are the usual causes, but a dryer is also an appliance where heat, electricity and flammable lint meet, so caution comes before curiosity.
First Steps
- Stop the dryer and unplug it, or switch off the breaker if you cannot reach the plug. If the dryer is gas, close the gas valve behind it only if you can do so safely.
- Leave the door shut for a few minutes if you see smoke, since fresh air feeds a fire.
- If there is any flame or heavy smoke, leave the house and call 911 instead of investigating.
Common Reasons
- Lint buildup: lint in the vent, around the lint screen housing or around the heater can scorch. This is the most common cause.
- A foreign object: a coin, a tissue or a sock can fall behind the drum or catch against a seal.
- Worn drum parts: a belt or roller that drags can make a rubbery or hot smell.
- Something in the clothes: oil, cooking grease or chemicals on laundry can smell like a dryer problem and can also ignite.
What You Can Check Safely
With the dryer unplugged, clean the lint screen, look behind it with a flashlight and check that the outside vent flap opens. Do not restart the dryer until you know the smell has a harmless explanation, such as a new-appliance odor that fades in the first few loads.
What We Cannot Conclude Without Opening It
A scorched smell with no visible lint can still involve a heating element or wiring. That is not something to test by running another cycle.
